Reception: Ear Microsuction

Ear wax is a naturally occurring substance released in the ear. Unfortunately in some people it can cause issues including:

  • earache
  • difficulty hearing
  • itchiness
  • dizziness
  • Ringing in the ear (tinnitus)

Earwax usually falls out on its own. If it does not and blocks your ear, put 2 to 3 drops of sodium bicarbonate, olive or almond oil in your ear twice a day for a few days.

Over 2 weeks lumps of earwax should fall out of your ear, especially at night when you're lying down.

There's no evidence that ear candles or ear vacuums get rid of earwax.

If the above is ineffective, and you would like the wax removed then we recommend microsuction. We used to do ear syringing in the past however this was stopped due to risks of complications and specialist advice that ear microsuction is a far superior treatment method.

We have access to microsuction at a number of local sites. These are outlined below.

The cost of the procedure is fully covered by the NHS when referred by us. If undertaken without completing this form it will cost £50.

On completing this form you will contacted so we can arrange an appointment to examine your ears. If wax is confirmed a referral for microsuction will be made.

Please do not write any clinical queries on this form. Any clinical queries or request for appointments via this form will be discarded. To make an appointment either book online via the NHS app/Patient access or by calling reception 01926 316711. We will start to process your form by the next working day but it will take up to 3 working days to complete. Please do not call before 3 working days as you will not receive a status update from reception or the administrative team. If you are not a registered patient then your form will be discarded. This service is only for patients registered at the surgery aged 16 and over; and for parents or legal guardians of children. Forms must be completed in the UK due to GDPR regulations.
