Maternity Care Protocol (Drs Davis Dunn and Holtby April 2007 RMD)

6-10 weeks Patient & Receptionist Establish diagnosis of pregnancy (home test) and arrange registration for maternity care
10-12 weeks Midwife Booking and initial blood tests
Home delivery risks discussed
Maternity risk category assessed
GP Hospital referral as appropriate
 
12 weeks Hospital Ultrasound To confirm/establish dates
16 weeks Midwife Blood testing for Spina bifida / Downs
Ante natal check
 
20 weeks Hospital Ultrasound Look for Foetal anomalies such as Spina bifida or Downs
 
24 weeks GP Check mother and baby
Rhesus antibodies (Rh - ve women)
 
28 weeks Midwife Check mother and baby
Rhesus antibodies (Rh - ve women)
 
32 weeks GP Check mother and baby
 
34 weeks Midwife (if low risk)or Hospital Clinic
 
Check mother and baby
36 weeks Midwife Check mother and baby
Assess delivery risks, fetal size, position, movements
Rhesus antibodies (Rh - ve women)
 
38 weeks Midwife Check mother and baby.
Assess delivery risks, fetal size, position, movements
 
40 weeks Midwife Check mother and baby
Reassess delivery risks, fetal size, position
Rhesus antibodies (Rh - ve women)
 
41 weeks Midwife (if low risk) or Hospital Check mother and baby Reassess delivery risks, fetal size, position, movements
Arrange induction for 42 weeks (term plus 14 days)
