Glucosamine - is it useful? (11/2002 RMD)
A review in Novembers edition of Drug and Therapeutics bulletin of all
the available research to date came to these conclusions.
Confirmed studies showed glucosamine to be as effective as ibuprofen in
pain relief
and in the knee at any rate to slow osteo-arthritic cartilage loss.
Very few side effects have been reported and these do not differ in the
rate of placebo controls.
BUT should be avoided in those with known shellfish allergy (shellfish
derived so watch for allergies)
Dose used should be 1500mg daily.
Glucosamine can be bought from local chemists, health food shops and
mail order.
Don't forget that a couple of cod liver oil capsules daily may also help
with the stiffness of arthritis.
